About

On December 6-7th, Black Women in Motion hosted its 4th annual This Means WAAR conference at the Nia Centre for the Arts. The two-day event aims to increase dialogue on cultural attitudes towards rape culture and sexual violence.

The conference is presented by the Black Peer Education Network (BPEN), a group of black youth from across Toronto, committed to creating healthier and safer learning spaces for Black youth to collectively work through dismantling and challenging rape culture and sexual violence within the community. In addition to the conference, the BPEN hosts a number of events centred on healing, boundary setting, consent, and rape culture, to facilitate conversations about the unique ways sexual violence impacts the black community.

“Over the last five months, Community Animators from our Black Peer Education Network have been participating in workshops designed to develop and deepen their knowledge on media literacy, consent, sex positivity, healthy relationships advocacy and event planning. This weekend is the culmination of everything they’ve learned thus far in the program,” says Monica Samuel, Founder and Executive Director
